Today Friday, March 29th is the birthday of Mirjam Helin.

She was born in 1911 in St. Petersburg, but moved already 1918 with her familly to Helsinki, independent Finland. After her vocal studies she had her debut performance in 1938. Teaching was to be her chief artistic passion. Indeed, she counts as one of the foremost Finnish vocal pedagogues and made a significant contribution to the development of teaching methodology in her field.

At her 70th birthday Mirjam made a large donation to the Finnish Cultural Foundation to carry out the first Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition in August 1984. From the very beginning, the aim was to create world's best singing competition.
