Marja-Leena Pétas-Arjava Vice President of the World Federation of International Music Competitions

Mrs Marja-Leena Pétas-Arjava, MMus and Executive Director of the Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition, has been elected Vice President of the World Federation of International Music Competitions, Geneva for the period three-year period 2015–2018. The Federation is a worldwide network of leading music competitions and organisations and has around 120 members.
The Federation’s mission is, through professionally-directed competitions, to spot talented youngsters in the field of music and, via the Foundation’s extensive international network, to promote their chances of making a successful career. The Finnish international music competitions occupy a widely-recognised role in accomplishing this mission. The International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition and the International Maj Lind Piano Competition are also members of the Federation.
The Finnish Cultural Foundation organises the Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition once every five years. The winners of the most recent competition, held in August 2014, were Ukrainian soprano Kateryna Kasper and Korean tenor Beomjim Kim. The Mirjam Helin Competition is designed for outstanding young singers who already have some performing experience and it is widely known for its exacting repertoire.

The Finnish Cultural Foundation is a private trust dedicated to promoting art, science, and other fields of intellectual and cultural endeavour in Finland. The Foundation provides grants from a central fund and 17 regional funds. It also engages in cultural activities of its own.
